The Powerful Antioxidant Properties of CBD For Your Skin

CBD Skincare

When you think about antioxidants, what comes to mind?

If you’re like most people, you’re imagining acai smoothie bowls or a fresh-pressed juice filled with kale and lemon. Veggies, fruits, nuts, and wild fish contain antioxidants including Vitamins A, C, and E, but what may surprise you is that CBD oil contains even more antioxidant power than these foods!

Do we have your attention now, kitties?

Read on to learn exactly why CBD oil is not only changing the skincare game, but is your next antioxidant superhero!

What are antioxidants and why do you need them?

Antioxidants are natural substances essential for maintaining a healthy body. They prevent oxidation -- a chemical reaction that causes free radicals to form inside our bodies.

Free radicals are dangerous because if left to their own devices, they can cause serious damage to our cells, which may result in illness and chronic disease.

When it comes to skin, antioxidants are famous for combating visible signs of aging. They can also revitalize dull skin and calm redness and irritation.

In addition to eating healthy, you can look to CBD oil for an ideal source of antioxidants.

CBD oil antioxidant properties

The cannabinoids in hemp and cannabis plants are abundant with cannabidiol (CBD), a powerful antioxidant.

A 1998 National Institute of Mental Health study was the first to show the antioxidant properties of CBD, going on to prove that CBD is a more powerful source of antioxidants than Vitamins C and E.

As far back as 2001, a patent issued to US Health and Human services states that “cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties (…) in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, HIV, and dementia”.

What does this mean for your skin?

These non-psychoactive cannabinoids, when applied topically, can improve the appearance of skin by protecting against free radicals such as smoke, environmental damage, and the sun’s UV rays.

Free radicals can lead to various skincare issues including wrinkles and fine lines. Antioxidants in CBD oil help to fight these effects of aging by protecting the skin.

The way it works is that CBD interacts with cannabinoid receptors which are found throughout the skin. This interaction promotes balance in the skin (homeostasis), which helps the skin heal itself through the body’s regular processes.

Studies have shown various skin conditions can successfully be treated with CBD oil, including eczema, acne, skin allergies, and diseases (including skin cancer).

In one study, hemp oil was shown to be an effective treatment for eczema, while another study showed that CBD may balance the level of oils in the skin while preventing skin cells’ fat production.

In addition to the many antioxidant benefits of CBD, hemp oil is also jam-packed with other vitamins, proteins, fatty acids, minerals, and nutrients that all help repair your skin while keeping it smooth. And when applying CBD topically, the antioxidants will be immediately absorbed through your skin and target the spots where you need them!
